What to Know When Purchasing a Sewing Machine

Apr 05, 2024

If you're thinking of buying your first sewing machine, there are several things you should consider. A sewing machine is an investment, so you want to make sure you're making a smart purchase where you can get many years of use. Let's look at a few things you should think about when buying a sewing machine.

Basics

If you're ready to buy your first sewing machine, you probably already know a few things about sewing machines. In our experience, you'll want to look for a machine with a full rotary hook. This feature helps you to avoid a lot of jammed fabric. You want a hook that goes in a circle not just back and forth.

You should also look for a machine that opens to easily clean out the lint. Lint will accumulate over time, and it's necessary to clean it so that you can get the most out of your sewing projects and so that you don't cause unnecessary fire risks. Make sure you remain aware of this for everyone's safety.

Stitch Options

To get most sewing projects done, you'll want a machine that offers basic stitch options. These include straight, zig-zag, stretch straight, tri-motion, blind hem, and buttonhole. With these basic stitches, you can complete sewing projects and even make most types of basic clothing.

Type of Machine

You'll also want to decide if you're purchasing an electronic or mechanical sewing machine. Mechanical machines will require that you turn dials to select the stitches that you want. An electronic machine will have stitches programmed into the machine. The machine will be able to make stitch adjustments for you. You can select stitches just by pressing a button. According to Grand View Research, electric sewing machines have dominated the sewing machine market; in 2021, they accounted for the largest revenue share of more than 44%.

Budget

Sewing machines come in many price points. You'll want to consider how you'll be using the machine to help inform your budget. For instance, if this is a sewing machine to simply learn on, you might not want to purchase at the higher end of the spectrum. However, if you'll be using the machine a lot for projects or even for products you're producing to sell, you might feel okay about investing a little more.

These are just a few things to think about when purchasing a sewing machine. If you'd like to learn more about sewing machines, or you'd like to look at a sewing machine, please contact Bernina Sew N Quilt Studio. We hope you'll come by to check out our inventory!
